Blockchain Revolution and College Education

Originally, blockchain technology was only important for maintain Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. But we soon understood its revolutionary potential in safe management of digital information. The blockchain preserves data from being stolen or manipulated in any way.

Each member of the computer network keeps original records of everything that’s going on with the data. That makes the technology perfect for money transfers, real estate records, medical records, smart contracts, cloud storage, governmental information storage, and more.

All industries can benefit from the blockchain revolution. This brings us to an issue: the available workforce doesn’t correspond to the needs of the market. Many companies and organizations need blockchain experts but don’t have access to them. That’s how the need for college education in blockchain becomes evident.

Blockchain College Education Prepares Students to Enter the Workforce

Blockchain development is one of the best IT skills to have when looking for a job. Finding blockchain talent is hard for the companies, so they are willing to compete for it. You know what that means: higher salaries and better incentives for those skilled in blockchain technology.

The problem is that the usual IT degree program doesn’t prepare you for this type of job. You don’t need a special degree to get a job related to blockchain, but getting relevant education certainly helps. With this skill, job applicants can aim for various positions as freelancers or as traditional employees:

  • Blockchain legal consultant
  • Internship and entry-level blockchain developer
  • Blockchain developer
  • Blockchain engineer
  • Blockchain project manager
  • Blockchain quality engineer
  • Blockchain web designer

As students demand to be skilled in blockchain by the time they get their degrees, colleges and universities are taking action. We’re finally seeing degree programs moving away from the traditional project-based approach. Students don’t like writing academic papers for each course they attend, so it’s no wonder why they are looking for essay writing service review when they get stuck. With practical education, colleges prepare them to enter the workforce without going through an internship period after graduation.

Cornell University is one of the Ivy League universities that saw the need for such a change. The university started The Initiative for CryptoCurrencies & Contracts, which supports the process of blending finance with computer science. By collaborating with experts in banking and finance, open source software communities, entrepreneurs and regulators, Cornell brings practical blockchain education into its lecture halls. For students who want to study blockchain, Cornell is possibly the best choice at the moment. It hosts conferences, invites students to be part of important projects, and offers specific courses in blockchains, cryptocurrencies, and smart contracts.

However, Cornell is not the only university supporting the education blockchain revolution. Courses and projects are also available at NYU, MIT, Duke, Georgetown, Stanford, Princeton, Berkeley, and many other schools. Berkeley, in particular, has a specific student organization focused on blockchain innovation. Through education, consulting, design, and research, these students are getting ready to hit the job market before they even graduate.

Formal Blockchain Education Is Available and It’s Useful!

The average college student has to complete various essays, juggle between different speech topics, and learn things they are never going to use in real life. General education is important, but it should never come at the expense of knowledge that students really need. Students in IT, legal, and accounting programs currently need knowledge in blockchain, and that’s what the universities should deliver.

We’re fortunate to see college programs evolving in the right direction. There’s no need for a specific degree in blockchain, although that’s a possibility through MA programs at the moment. University of Barcelona, for example, offers a Global Master’s in Blockchain Technologies program. But all leading colleges and universities offer courses that students from different programs can attend. That’s good news!
